Techniques
Procedure 1
First a number of factors are taken into consideration:
The over all concept of the project.
Size and shape.
The position and style of the building.
The relationship with other windows.
Procedure 2
Once the final drawing of the stain glass window has been approved the drawing is then traced onto a sheet of tracing type paper (this is the cut line).
Procedure 3
Once the cut line drawing is complete the pieces of glass are placed on it to begin cutting the glass to shape.
Procedure 4
Once the glass has been painted the pieces are placed
on special trays and fired in the kiln. The firing process is repeated several
times to get the required finish.
Here we see part of a stain glass window already cut to
shape and the painting process beginning
Procedure 5
Once the glass is ready the final assembly can take
place. The separate pieces of glass are fitted into H section lead cames which
are then soldered. The cames are filled with special compound to make the window
watertight and rigid.
Stout copper wires are then incorporated to enable the window to be attached
to the supporting bars which are located in the surrounding stonework.
